The Blue Beyond: Why Topaz is the Ultimate Artisan Gemstone

There is something about the clarity of a Topaz that feels like looking into a cloudless sky or a pristine rockpool. As a jeweller, I’ve worked with some of the the world’s most expensive diamonds and rarest rubies, but I always find myself returning to Topaz for my own collections.

It’s versatile, vibrant, and carries a history as colorful as the stone itself. If you’ve ever wondered why this gem is a staple in the Mijoux Creations studio, here is everything you need to know about the "Stone of Clarity."

A Spectrum of Blues

While Topaz naturally occurs in a variety of colors—from golden "Imperial" yellows to soft pinks—it is the Blue Topaz that has captured the modern heart. In my work, I typically use two distinct shades:

  • Sky Blue Topaz: This is light, bright, and reminiscent of a summer afternoon. It’s perfect for delicate silver work where you want a "pop" of light without it feeling too heavy.

  • Swiss Blue Topaz: Intensely vivid and electric. This is the stone for when you want your jewellery to be the conversation starter.

Why Topaz is a Jeweller’s Favorite

From a craftsmanship perspective, Topaz is a dream to work with. On the Mohs Scale of Hardness, Topaz sits at an 8. To put that in perspective, a diamond is a 10 and a sapphire is a 9.

This means it is incredibly durable for everyday wear. Whether it’s set in one of my signature silver "Birthstone Pebble" pendants or a daily-wear ring, you don’t have to worry about it scratching too easily. It retains its "vitreous" (glass-like) luster for years, catching the light every time you move.

The Lore: More Than Just a Pretty Face

Ancient civilizations believed Topaz had almost magical properties. The Greeks thought it could give the wearer strength and even make them invisible in times of peril (though I can’t personally guarantee that last part!).

In the world of holistic wellness today, Topaz is known as a stone of communication and love. It’s said to help the wearer channel their intentions and find their true path. This makes it a deeply thoughtful gift for someone starting a new chapter—a graduation, a new job, or a big move.

How to Style Your Topaz

Because Topaz is such a "clean" looking stone, it pairs beautifully with the cool tones of recycled sterling silver.

  • For a Minimalist Look: Pair a single Sky Blue Topaz pendant with a crisp white linen shirt.

  • For the Bold: Layer different shades of blue. I love seeing a Swiss Blue Topaz set against my deep blue enamel pieces; the contrast in textures between the faceted stone and the smooth enamel is stunning.

Caring for Your Gem

Topaz is tough, but it loves a little TLC. To keep your Mijoux piece sparkling, simply use warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush. Avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners, as Topaz can be sensitive to rapid temperature changes.
